Position Summary

The Undergraduate Student Academic Advisor position is a critical member of the student services team at the Berkeley School of Education. In addition to providing advising and student services support for undergraduate students throughout their time at the BSE, the Student Academic Advisor provides coordination and support for a range of student services, including outreach, community building, and program planning. The SAA 3 also provides input and support to faculty regarding student progress, as well as scheduling and curriculum needs. The Academic Advisor maintains in-depth working knowledge of college, department, and university advising policies and serves as the authority on undergraduate advising within the department. This position reports directly to the Director of Student Services, but also receives work assignments from the Chair and Co-Chair of the Undergraduate Committee.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of College, department & University policies, rules and regulations.

• Utilize knowledge of these policies to support undergraduates with identifying their educational goals, ensure timely declaration of major, maintain adherence to overall unit limits, and achieve advancement to degree Advise students on BSE degree and major requirements.
• Support students with course pairings and discuss different paths to complete degree requirements and ways to complete requirements that may not be clearly defined or when there are no clear precedents or articulations, or when transfer work is involved.
• Evaluate and advise students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college requirements.

Counsel students experiencing academic difficulty.

• Discuss academic probationary status and support students with developing short- and long-term plans to resolve academic status.
• Determine barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.

Advise new and continuing instructors on student progress and support services.

• Assist faculty on determining course scheduling needs for student progression to graduation.
• Serve as a resource and liaise with academic and administrative units on campus- provide information and communicate College policies to staff and faculty.
• Participate on department and campus-wide committees and work groups including the Undergraduate Programs Committee and Undergraduate Advising Operations & Policy Committee.

Support student life and foster student success.

• Create and implement workshops for students.
• Present information effectively in individual and group situations using electronic, written, and oral formats.
• Help foster a culture of inclusion and belonging in alignment with the BSE Mission and values and the UC Berkeley principles of community through student events, services, and advising.
• Facilitate undergraduate communication and community building through student newsletter, emails, and social media.
• Organize and facilitate student recognition (i.e. Undergraduate Completion Celebration Outstanding GSI selection process, etc.).

Required Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
• Thorough knowledge of and/or can quickly learn department/college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
• Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
• Detail oriented and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
• Commitment to working with historically underrepresented/marginalized groups.
• Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students in a diverse, inclusive campus climate.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, work under pressure, and adjust priorities when dealing with competing responsibilities.
• Excellent written and communication skills.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,200.00 - $81,200.00.
