SUMMARY: As a Heavy Equipment Operator, this position is responsible for supporting field operations at marine or railroad project locations for Russell Marine, LLC. The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate a variety of heavy equipment for construction, demolition, or excavation projects in the construction or repair of marine terminals, dock facilities, and/or railroad bridges.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment and construction power equipment such as mechanized brooms, backhoes, excavators, man-lifts, dump trucks, road graders, front-end loaders, bulldozers, hydraulic excavators, and/or other heavy equipment as assigned. This includes moving, loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections of assigned heavy equipment to identify possible problem areas on equipment and advise the site foreman of any required or upcoming maintenance or repairs.
  • Conduct daily maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, oiling, fueling, and safely storing assigned equipment.
  • Maintain safe and effective operations to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.
  • Assist in excavation activities, including hoisting material, tools, or equipment, as well as any other heavy equipment-related work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Must possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be willing/eligible to obtain one upon hire. Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Experience: Minimum of six (6) months experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Knowledge of heavy equipment operations and safety of front-end loaders, bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, and/or other pieces of heavy equipment. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification(s): Cranes and Rigging Safety Training (Construction). Rigger and Signal Person Training (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced).
  • Experience: Three (3) or more years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Thorough understanding of maintenance and basic repairs associated with heavy equipment. General understanding of the operational limits and specifications of the assigned equipment. Ability to perceive distances and slopes accurately to ensure quick-connect attachments are connected properly.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
  • The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal floatation devices (PFD), and/or other protective equipment.
  • The individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts and must be able to adapt to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
  • The individual may be required to work long hours and/or weekends. Additionally, some out-of-town or overnight travel may be required.
  • The individual may occasionally be required to sit in a vehicle for up to 8 hours.
  • The individual may be required to walk, step, climb, or otherwise move from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • The individual may occasionally be required to stand, stoop, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, or sit for long periods.
  • The individual may be required to work in confined spaces, climb vertical ladders of a height of 6 ft. or greater, and/or elevated heights.
  • The individual may be required to lift objects with a minimum of 10 lbs. and a maximum single-person lift of 50 lbs. This could result in frequent lifting or carrying depending on project needs.
  • The individual must meet specific vision abilities, such as close vision and color vision.
  • The individual may be required to perform repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back in the performance of work.
