Job Description

Gray Line Tennessee is Nashville's Leader in Transportation with over 200 vehicles in the fleet and nearly 400 employees dedicated to providing safe, authentic, and professional transportation services. We currently operate five distinct businesses, all of which are oriented toward safety, quality, and customer service.


The School Bus Monitor is responsible for assisting the bus driver in providing safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of students. The monitor ensures students follow safety rules, assists with boarding and exiting the bus, and supports the driver in maintaining discipline and safety during routes.


Schedule and Compensation

  • $17/HR
  • Split Shifts - Morning and Afternoon Route
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Employer Paid Life Insurance, PTO, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with boarding, seating, and exiting the bus safely.
  • Ensure students remain properly seated and follow all bus safety rules.
  • Provide additional support for young children and students with disabilities, including securing seatbelts, harnesses, or wheelchairs.
  • Maintain order on the bus, addressing minor behavior issues and reporting more serious problems to the driver or school officials.
  • Assist the driver during emergencies and participate in bus evacuation drills.
  • Monitor student conduct to prevent bullying, fighting, or unsafe activities.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with students, parents, staff, and administrators.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the transportation department.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in stressful situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug test

Day-to-Day Expectations Guide for School Bus Monitors

Before Students Board

  • Arrive on time and greet students warmly.
  • Assist young children and students with special needs in finding seats and securing belts/harnesses.
  • Ensure aisle and exits are clear.

During the Ride

  • Enforce safety rules (stay seated, keep voices at a reasonable level, no rough play).
  • Watch for bullying, conflicts, or unsafe behavior — step in early and calmly.
  • Keep distractions away from the bus driver — handle issues so the driver can focus on driving.
  • Provide reassurance to nervous or upset children.
  • Be alert and watchful throughout the ride — no personal phone use or distractions.

At Stops & Drop-Off

  • Assist students in safely exiting the bus.
  • Help young children cross the street if required.
  • Ensure students are released only at their correct stop.

In Emergencies

  • Know evacuation procedures and help guide students to safety.
  • Provide assistance to the driver in medical or safety emergencies.
  • Remain calm and keep students calm.

Overall Professionalism

  • Be a positive role model — respectful, calm, and dependable.
  • Communicate issues promptly to the driver or school staff (don’t handle major discipline alone).
  • Treat all students fairly, with patience and understanding.
